The Impact of the Unknown:
Unravelling the Urban Lexicon.
A Bright Sparks funded research project, undertaken by designers and public space specialists, Rosanna Vitiello and Marcus Willcocks, in conjunction with Gunpowder Park.
We attempt to reveal how some of the elements found in our public realm combine to define sensory codes; the disperse details that subconsciously build up a ‘vocabulary’ and can trigger emotional responses in us.
This investigation will start to unravel how culturally learnt codes impact our feelings and our sense of unknown urban environments.
The research will inform chapter 1 of a visual dictionary on the alphabet of everyday codes in urban spaces, with a focus on a personal emotions, as positive and negative responses to those spaces.
Rosanna Vitiello and Marcus Willcocks both hail from a design background, and have crossed traditional discipline boundaries to focus on design in the public realm. Rosanna brings experience in strategy and communication, whilst Marcus’ specialism is user-centered design and research.
Both share an interest in uniting the social perspective with design aspects of public space and collaborate with anthropologists, architects and designers to explore this field. Having both studied and worked in the UK and Spain they have gained access to different cultural viewpoints, enriching their perspective of the public realm.
